Okay, so we've got some big news, and I'm really, really proud of this one. We're officially Non-GMO Project Verified! But... what does that even mean? I feel like I see that label everywhere, but for a long time, I didn't totally get what it was all about.
GMO just stands for Genetically Modified Organism. Basically, it's when scientists mess with the DNA of a plant or an animal in a lab, in a way that would never happen in nature on its own. It's a little weird when you think about it that way.
And it's everywhere. I read somewhere that something like 80% of the stuff in a regular grocery store has GMOs in it. That's wild. The whole point of Non-GMO is that the crops are grown without all those harsh chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides. So, you know, you're not eating that stuff. When you see that little butterfly logo, that's the simplest way to know you're avoiding it.
About the NON-GMO Project
It's kind of a cool story, actually. The whole thing was started back in 2007 by a couple of grocery stores. Just two stores, one in California and one in Canada, who were just trying to give their shoppers honest info about GMOs. I love that. It wasn't some big corporation, just people who cared and decided to do something.
Why we say no to GMO
For us, saying no to GMOs was kind of a no-brainer. We're trying to make the best possible products we can, you know? And we want to do it in a way that's good for the long run, for our kids and their kids. A lot of these GMO crops are designed to either create their own bug killer inside the plant or to survive being drenched in weed killer. This has led to just a massive increase in the use of some really toxic chemicals, which messes up the whole ecosystem, that natural biodiversity that nature needs to work right. We just... we don't want to be a part of that cycle.
And it’s not just that. It's about the farmers, too. The people who grow the stuff that goes into our products. We want to support them and their right to grow what they want and to save their own seeds from year to year. It seems like such a basic thing, but it’s a huge deal in farming. So yeah, by choosing non-GMO, we feel like we're putting our money where our mouth is and investing in a better future for people and the planet.
Your right to choose non-GMO
Honestly, I believe everyone should have the right to choose what they feed their family. It's that simple. And this whole genetic modification field is changing so fast, with all these new techniques and ingredients popping up all the time. That little butterfly seal from the Non-GMO Project... it's the one I trust. They're an independent group, and they really stay on top of all the new science.
This is what I’ve learned about their process. They check everything, trace all the ingredients back to where they came from, and have third parties test them to make sure they meet the highest standard. It's really, really rigorous. In a world with so many confusing labels, that butterfly just makes the decisions a little bit easier, and I'm grateful for that.
Working toward the future we want
Going through the Non-GMO Project verification process is tough, I won't lie. They are incredibly strict. But it's worth it. I really believe we all have a shared responsibility to look out for each other and for our planet. It sounds so big, I know, but it's true. Everything is connected in ways we don't even fully understand. Even a small choice, like what you buy at the store, can ripple out and make a real difference. Choosing that Non-GMO label feels like we’re doing our little part to support a healthier, more sustainable world for everyone.
It's funny, the more I learn about our food system, the more I realize that the choices we make every day really do add up. They shape the kind of world we're building. It can feel overwhelming sometimes, but choosing non-GMO feels like one small, solid step in the right direction. It's something I can actually do.
